Nantes (/nat/) [3][4][5] French: [nat] [na[:]t];[5] Breton : Naoned ('naun@t]]] is a 50-km (31 mi) city located in Loire-Atlantique, on the Loire. With a population of just 309,346 people in Nantes, and a metro area of almost 973,000 residents, the city is sixth in France. [7] Nantes is a major metropolitan area in the north-western French region. It shares Saint-Nazaire (a seaport located on the Loire estuary).
It is also the administrative seat for the Loire-Atlantique region and the Pays de la Loire area, which are both one of 18 French regions. Brittany was once a province and duchy of Nantes. It is therefore controversial that Nantes has been removed from Brittany's modern administrative region.
In classical antiquity, Nantes was recognized as a port on Loire. It was home to a bishopric in the Roman era, before being conquered by Bretons in 1985. After the 1532 union between Brittany and France, Nantes was still the principal residence of the dukes of Brittany. However, Rennes became their provincial capital. After the French colonial empire was established in 17th century France, Nantes became the largest French port and was responsible almost half of the 18th century French Atlantic slave trade. Although the French Revolution led to an economic decline, Nantes developed strong industries after 1850, primarily in shipbuilding and food processing. The city adopted a service economy after deindustrialization in the second half 20th century.
