Penang (Malay name Pulau Pinang), is a Malaysian state that lies on the northeast coast of Peninsular Malaysia by the Malacca Strait. It is divided into two parts: Penang Island (where George Town is the capital) and Seberang Perai, on the Malay Peninsula. These two parts are linked by Malaysia's longest road bridges, Penang Bridge (where the capital city, George Town is located) and Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge (where the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge is located). The latter bridge was also the longest oversea bridge in Southeast Asia as of May 2019. [3] Penang, the second-smallest state in Malaysia by land mass is bordered by Kedah and Perak to its north and east and Perak to its south. [1]
Penang's population was almost 1.767 million at 2018[update]. Its population density was 1,684/km2 (4.360/sq mi) [4] Penang has one of the most urbanized states in the country and boasts the highest number of residents. Seberang Perai, Malaysia's second largest city by population, is Seberang Perai. Its diverse population is rich in culture, religion, ethnicity and language. Apart from the Malays, Chinese and Indians, Penang also has significant Siamese, Eurasian and expatriate populations. [7][8][9] George Town also houses a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A resident of Penang is colloquially known as a Penangite or Penang Lang (Penang Hokkien: Bi Neng Nong ; Tai-lo: Pi-neeng-lang) in Penang Hokkien. [10]
