Yangon (Burmese pronunciation: rnkun) is the capital of the Yangon Region. It's pronounced [jaWgoUW-mjo] and lit. Yangon (Burmese: rnkun; pronounced [jaWgoUW mjo]), is the capital of Yangon Region. It is also known as Rangoon. Yangon was the capital of Myanmar from 2006 to 2006. The military government moved administrative functions to Naypyidaw, a purpose-built capital in northern Myanmar. Yangon, Myanmar's largest city and most important commercial hub, is home to more than 7 million people.

Yangon has the most colonial-era buildings of Southeast Asia [5], and a unique urban core from colonial era that remains remarkably intact. The Sule Pagoda is the center of the colonial-era commercial heart. It is believed to be more than 2,000 years old. [7] The city also houses the Shwedagon Pagoda, Myanmar's most revered and famous Buddhist pagoda.

Yangon was where Bahadur Shah II, the last Mughal Emperor, was buried. [8]
